  • Comfortable bed.
  • It smelled like a grandma's house.

“This was probably a nice hotel 40 years ago. It is filled with antiques and brocade fabrics. When I entered my room there was a gum wrapper on the floor in front of the sink. Granted, it wasn't a toe nail or anything disgusting, but still it was obvious. The TV was old and the picture sputtered in and out. The valet parking was not clearly marked. I later figured out that I needed to turn the wrong way on a one-way street to enter the underground parking where the valet is located. Also upon checking out, the valet driver pulled my car up pretty far away and did not help me with my bags. He just asked if I needed directions and walked away. No tip for you.”

  • Staff was very pleasant, room was clean and very nice.

“Loved the room.”

  • The Monte Cristo from room service and they gave me in-house made jam.
  • The valet broke off the end of our gear shift.

“Great for a romantic or business getaway. Downtown, heard a lot of late night noise, nothing overpowering though from the 9th floor.”

  • Spacious and comfortable room with very comfortable bed.
  • No pool or jacuzzi.

“Very nice old style hotel with a good restaurant and very comfortable beds. Lacking a swimming pool or spa is a negative.”

  • Authentic decor; spacious bath; marble bathroom.

“Excellent hotel, wonderful staff . However, there was an additional "facilities fee" which we did not have an opportunity to opt out of .”

  • Loved the balcony and the huge room. The staff was excellent, big smiles, great suggestions for restaurants.
  • I did not like the daily fifteen dollar fee for services that I did not use (Internet). Parking fee was high.

“The room was beautiful, the staff was courteous and helpful, the location was excellent. My only beef is with paying for services I did not use (15 dollar per day fee for Internet and bottled water-- neither of which I needed or used). I understand that parking in the city is expensive, but most hotels at least offer a "self-park" option so you can save a little money. This one was valet-parking only. But oh, the room was beautiful with a fantastic shower in the large bathroom, a small balcony, and large sliding doors with a gorgeous view of the city.”

  • The decor was unique.
  • A
lot of fees (roll away bed fees, amenities fees) . They don't have a swimming pool.

“Overall, I think this should be rated as a 3 star hotel instead of 4.”

  • Friendly helpful staff, turn down service, business center, European decor, Downtown locations close to many amenities.
  • Hall and room doors loud when closed. No soundproof between rooms sharing common foyer. Resort fee of $15.

“ Very elegant hotel. Friendly helpful staff. Rooms are large and comfortable. Turn down service. Use of business center great for checking in for flights and printing off boarding passes. Rooms sharing a common foyer are not soundproof, we had a couple who came in late after an evening of drinking and were talking loud and banging doors closed. Hint: a little weatherstripping around the doors might help. Pool is being built as well as a spa center which will add to the appeal of this hotel.

  • Size and features of the room.
  • Appeared short on staff and no lobby resources like restaurants.

“Nice old world hotel with outstanding rooms.”

  • Very nice and comfortable hotel. No real complaints.
  • Small details around cleaning and noisy locks.

“Very nice above average hotel. About 4 stars more or less.”

  • Clean, large, and unique.
  • There was an additional
    service charge that is required.

“Nice!”

  • Close to gaslamp dining, and people friendly staff.
  • Having to ask for ice and price of parking. Addition hotel fees added.

“Large rooms with European style.”

“Hotel was great! Wish someone had told me about making reservations for tea time. Would have loved to have sat down for some.”

  • The staff was very friendly, and the location was excellent.
  • The charged an automatic daily $15. fee for bottled water and use of the health club even if you didn't plan on using either. It was not an option.

“It is an older hotel with lots of character and a beautiful lobby. However, since it is old there were some issues with our shower/tub draining slowly and a few stains on the carpet in our room.”

  • Perfect Downtown location. Exactly what I was looking for.
  • Cost of parking and resort fee.

“Overall had a great experience. Cost of parking and resort fee added 35% to room price. I had read reviews and expected it, but I wish they would simply build the resort fee to the room price since it is a mandatory fee.”

  • Lobby decoration.
  • Staff, beds, blankets, water pressure so hard hurt skin, 15 dollar night added fee without being told.

“Good Victorian decorations, overall dissatisfied by comfort, everything was old, worn out and rude staff. Would never stay there again.”

  • Was expecting a double queen instead of 2 double beds.

“I wish I had had a choice of parking. The valet parking was not expected and expensive.”

  • Good location, clean and luxurious.
  • No swimming pool.

“Good location, good service. Staff seems friendly. Parking is very expensive and there is a $20/day hotel fee.”

  • Hotel was located near conference that I attended in downtown San Diego.
  • I was unpleasantly surprised with high "resort fee" in addition.

“Staff was very unfriendly. Resort fee of $15 per day was charged in addition making the total cost higher than one would pay when making reservation via hotel's web site. The "resort fee" was for such a basic services as use of fitness room, which was very small and basic.”

  • It had a Victorian charm that was unexpected for a large hotel.
  • Extra $15/day charges for 'services' I did not use. Expensive parking charge ($35/day).

“The hotel was very charming, but that was overshadowed by the surprise extra charges upon arrival. We were charged $15/day extra for services such as Internet/ice/etc. none of which we used. There was an additional $35/day parking fee. At least the mandatory $15 service charge should be included in the initial price, not a surprise upon arrival. It is very underhanded practice for a so-called upscale hotel.”
